I've seen this opinion expressed in several places now, including possibly hearing it a couple times at con, but I'm now curious. Who out there feels that Wil Wheaton now owes Penguicon, something? (Usually showing up as a Nifty next year, or some such.) And why? |
I don't think he *owes* Penguicon anything, as illnesses will happen and clearly it's not like he just skipped out.
It would be nice if he could actually make it one year, but I'd hate to think he came because he was obligated to do so instead of wanting to be there.
It was awesome to see you by the way! Yay!
What custardfairy said, after a fashion. I'd rather the Con & ConCom not waste time or money trying to invite him a fourth time, but I don't think he "owes" Penguicon anything per se. It'd be great if he decided to just show up in some subsequent year, though. I think there would be much rejoicing. =)
Penguicon did a lot of advertising on behalf of Wil Wheaton. His name was on flyers. His website was linked to from Penguicon's website. By virtue of being listed as a GoH, he got a bit more (how much more is debatable) name visibility in what might be a cross-over crowd.
Admittedly being a GoH is more valuable to a lesser-known GoH, and there is a bit of quid pro quo because Wil did say on his website and his blog that he was planning to attend Penguicon, and that clearly brought in at least one person who would not have attended otherwise (per that person's blog; the link is available on the Penguicon-general list).
I don't know if Penguicon is out any money because of canceled flights and other reservations or not, but that could be an issue as well.
IMO, Wil has compensated already through his public apologies on his blog and website. It would be nice if he turned up someday, but I'm not going to hold my breath. Having read his blog for the past couple of years, he rarely leaves home, and stays on the West Coast when he does.
Maybe the solution is for Penguicon to make a movie, and hire him ....
I disagree that we advertised for Wil Wheaton. We advertised for us by using Wil Wheaton's name.
Regardless, I really don't feel that he owes us anything. We tried, he tried, we did not succeed. Just the cost of business.
